What to Wear for Fall

Everyone wants to make their upcoming school year a good one. We all want to put our best foot forward—to stand out, to make new friends, to create everlasting memories. But, this foot of yours will always look its best in a fashionable shoe, so listen up.

Let’s start with the basics. Plaid is a must. Whether you’re running on schedule or if you’ve got five minutes to spare before catching the train for school, a plaid shirt can make you look instantly polished, as well as comfy. A baggy plaid shirt over leggings always works. If you’re feeling edgier, try wearing one wrapped around your waist over jeans with neutral-coloured tank-top. Pleated plaid skirts are also quite popular this season, head over to Garage or American Apparel for a great selection.

Looking overdone at school is never cute, which is why the sports luxe trend looks great on so many people. Baseball caps and tees, plain ribbed tank tops, fitted track pants, Adidas running shoes, you name it—this laid-back look has been seen in stores as well as on the runway. Straight, slicked back hair looks great with this laid back style, either down or in a high pony tail. There’s a certain magnetism in dressing simply but put together.

And although summer is on its way out, pastels are still very in. Go for pale shades of cream, pink and blue. These colours are great for girls who are a little more girly. A cream knit sweater in the style of a kimono jacket, as seen at Brandy Melville, is a great versatile layer. Pair it with a pair of high-waisted jeans in a light wash or a pair of skinny jeans as the weather gets colder.

My next tip isn’t so much a style concept, but a particular item. Leggings. Get them. If you don’t have a standard black pair already, you’re probably not a female. But the trouser-type legging seen in stores like Dynamite and Mendocino are even better. You can wear them as pants without complaint. A lot of them are structured with zippers, patches and leather accents, meaning they’d be easy to dress up and down (they look super cute with heels!) They’re also usually a little thicker than regular leggings, while are perfect for your long, chilly, wintertime commute.

As for accessories, one can’t go wrong with a beanie. Instead of going for a typical black one, go for colour! The right shade can really brighten up a face. There’s nothing like a hat to fix a bad hair day. From the modern bowler hat to a wide-brimmed fedora, the right hat can add the perfect bit of edge.

Besides these trends, there’s one fashion rule everyone should follow: you’re never fully dressed without a smile! Beauty is only skin deep!

OK, but really, wear what makes you feel the most confident. Fashion is a form of self expression, a person’s first glance at who you are. Be yourself through the clothes you wear. Originality is key, my friends.
