Hopes were high for a Canadian to take home the Rogers Cup this year for the first time in over 50 years. Milos Raonic, of Thornhill, Ont., made it to the last round of the annual tournament to face Rafael Nadal of Spain.
Over two sets, Nadal ousted Milos with scores of 6-2 and 6-3. As a result of his win, the Spanish athlete has moved up in the worldwide ranks to no. 3.
Even though Raonic was defeated, he has made it into the top 10 as a result of his performance in the tournament. This is the first time ever a Canadian has been ranked that high for tennis.
And as the first Canadian athlete to make it into the finals of the Rogers Cup since 1958, Raonic has certainly made his country proud. Raonic’s signature move is his a strong serve, which proved to be off during the final match against one of the best players in the world.

The final was groundbreaking for the victor as well – the win marked Nadal’s 48th win this year. He has only lost two matches in 2013, and stands a chance to move up to number one in the world by the end of the year.
