Shaw shutting down Wind Mobile Stores? 100 Employees to lose jobs
TORONTO, ON: Supporters of Wind Mobile store operator Shami Munir launched a campaign today to save his business and his employees’ jobs. Shortly after Shaw announced its acquisition of discount carrier Wind Mobile, Shami Munir was informed his dealer agreement would be revoked.
“I have been an owner and operator of Wind Mobile stores for over five years. We have more than 200,000 very happy customers, 18 locations and 100 employees. If we can’t get our agreements re-instated, I will have to lay off all my employees by mid-March. I have not been able to get an answer from Wind Mobile as to why my agreements are being revoke. I can only conclude it has something to do with this buyout from Shaw.” Munir Stated.
Shaw announced the acquisition of Wind Mobile in December of 2015. Munir was notified his agreements would be cancelled in early January 2016. The deal has yet to be approved by the Competition Bureau or the Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, Navdeep Bains.
“My employees are obviously quite worried about their jobs, and other operators fear similar tactics. I am also concerned about our customers, we work very hard to ensure their satisfaction and find discount plans. I can only speculate that this has something to do with deal. It is highly coincidental that this action comes only a month after they announced. At the end of the day I am concerned for my employees and our customers and for what is fair. It seems like there will be no discount providers left in Canada. We already have some of the highest cellular rates in the world.”
