Festival Season has arrived in the city and there’s nothing like kicking off festival season quite like Electric Island. This is the fourth annual Electric Island series, where the island hosts electronic festivals on every long weekend of the summer. Waiting in line for a water taxi were anxious concert-goers, but it was worth the 45 minute wait to get on the island. The Island was transformed into a party haven incorporating a decorated main stage, Sapporo look out, a long line of food trucks and vendors selling everything from candy to artists painting body art.
The island was mystical; on every tree were hanging mirrored prisms and on stage were dancers wearing futuristic attire. This vibe further transcended with amazing music from Brain Johnson, Jonathan Rosa, Nature of Music, Job Jobse, DJ Tennis, Jamie Jones and Sven Väth. Artists brought their own sound to the day, allowing each part to feel different from the next. Fan favourite, Jamie Jones, an award-winning British DJ brought the house down, or should I say the island down. Jamie’s well known for his original mixes such as, Moan & Groan, People From The Moon and One Time Game. Concert-goers were visibly joyous throughout his set and it prepared the crowd for what was yet to come.
Speaking of the crowd, there was a balanced mix of dancers, head boppers, standers and people lying on the grass enjoying the music. It wasn’t a wild festival like many people would think when recalling an electronic music festival. Which is actually a huge selling point to the Electric Island series, as it gives new comers to the scene a warm welcome.
As the sunset, the DJ and legend everyone had been waiting for, Sven Väth, the Papa of electronic music was the perfect artist to close the show. With colours of pastel pink in the sky, hazy clouds from the smoke machine and the beats from Papa Sven blasting through the speakers, it was the perfect launch to summer in the city.
If you missed the first installment of Electric Island, don’t worry because the next long weekend is just around the corner. Canada Day long weekend, Toronto Island will host yet another amazing line up of artist including Tale Of Us, Ben Klock vs. Marcel Dettmann, Apollonia, Honey Dijon, Dirty Dale, Jeff Button, Koki and Butrous.
