The Scarborough Bluffs are located along the eastern part of Toronto and cover 15km of Lake Ontario’s coastline. At the highest point along the coastline it is 300ft, (90m) high. Originally named in 1793, the Bluffs have been the cause of several housing booms in the Toronto area, but have also been the cause of several housing busts as well.
The Bluffs are eroding away gradually, but with the building of homes, this erosion is happening at an even faster pace. Several large chunks of earth have broken away from the Bluffs causing homes to crumble and become unsafe.

It is not all doom and gloom though. The Bluffs also offer several kilometres of beaches to wander. Many of Scarborough’s youth tend to use the Bluffs as a late night social place. Letting the minimal lighting, and vast area be their playground for a multitude of extra curricular activities.
In recent years, the Bluffs have seen a transition and cleansing. Several higher end marinas have been developed, boat launches created, and an emphasis of being a more family friendly place given out to the public sector.
While the houses above may eventually crumble into Lake Ontario, those who live there now love their views and take their chances with the location. For the rest of the city, heading down to water level gives many opportunities to play in the water, sand, or whatever else can be found. Take a trip down Brimley Roas to the base and find your own Bluffs adventure. Whether it be day or night, there is always something to be found and something to do along Scarborough’s waterfront.
