May Cultural Round-Up | On-Stage In Toronto

Everyone loves a good cultural show because it’s a great way to escape from reality. It’s like a 3D movie on a stage. It’s always amazing how much work goes into a show no matter if it’s comedy or a musical. Here are some awesome shows to applaud in the month of May.

  1. Margaret Cho

One word to describe Cho’s comedy is raunchy. No one ever knows what’s going to come out of her mouth but we know there’s a ninety nine percent chance that it’s going to be funny. Cho is set to perform at The Danforth Music Hall on May 3rd at 6:30. She has a huge following so you’re going to want to nab your tickets sooner than later.
  2. David Sedaris
Sedaris has been performing comedy stand-up since the 70s and apparently, folks aren’t tired of his comedy yet. On May 16th prepare yourself for an evening with Mr. Sedaris and his comedy. The show starts at 8pm and judging from the reviews, it’s definitely a good time every time.
  3. Jackie Evancho
Jackie Evancho started performing classical music at ten. At ten, I didn’t even know what classical music was. Concertgoers are hailing that Jackie is a legend in the making. If you’re interested in being serenaded by a beautiful voice, grab your ticket ASAP! Jackie is set to perform May 22 at the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts.
  4. Once

Once is coming to Toronto and this Edna Walsh adaptation will feature an all-Canadian cast. Expect live on stage music, beautiful acting and follow the story of a busker named Guy who meets a girl and it’s love at first sight. They share a love for music and the audience will follow the two through their difficulties. There are no questions to why this is a Tony Award winning show. You can watch the love story unfold May 16-30 at Ed Mirvish Theatre.
  5. Titanic

We all know how the Titanic ends but the story will always be intriguing because it’s not just a story. It based on actual events. You can watch one of history’s biggest disasters unfold from your seat. This musical doesn’t focus on the epic love story from the Blockbuster film instead it focuses on a group of passengers in their final hours on the ship. You can catch this show May 19- June 21 at the Princess of Wales Theatre.
  6. Hairspray

Fall in love with Hairspray again and again as the story of plus sized Tracy Turnblad unfolds from your seat. Tracy once a nobody because an overnight sensation after winning a spot on a local TV dance show. You can watch the drama unfold at Cats Mainstage Theatre Company from May 21-24.

As usual, this list isn’t an exhaustive list. I’m sure there’s some other gems in Toronto that didn’t make the list. What show are you checking for in May?
