Guilty Pleasures: Movie Edition
Everybody has those movies that they’re embarrassed about watching-movies that you know are just so bad, yet so good. Films that make you cry when they shouldn’t, make you laugh at things that aren’t funny and more importantly, are so addictive that you genuinely enjoy watching them over and over again. Everybody loves a good guilty pleasure and if you’re looking for a few more, check out the following list:
Scary Movie (2000): Boooooo! Ahhhhh! Oh I’ll stop. This movie is not scary in the slightest, so if horror films aren’t for you, don’t fret. In fact, the movies within the Scary Movie saga are considered to be parodies of horror films. But you know when parodies go toooooo far so they’re not watchable? Yeah, well Scary Movie is not one of those movies, for me anyway. I feel like my IQ drops after every time I watch it, but the film really is hilarious and will have you peeing your pants. (when watching, remember to wear a diaper!) So what’s the movie about? One night, a group of four teens accidentally killed a man that they thought they could just forget about. Seriously though, they tossed him in the lake and acted as though nothing ever happened. However, one year later, the four find themselves being followed by a serial killer… So how is this movie funny? One word- sex (and everything that has to do with it). You’re probably thinking, “WTF!?”, but once you watch the film you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about!

Bring It On (2000): Hot cheerleaders- yes. Torrance Shipman (Kirsten Dunst), a senior in high school is “livin’ the life”. She’s hot, has a good-looking boyfriend and was just named the cheerleading captain at her school. What could wrong? Well, everything. Where do you think the boyfriend went? Do you think Torrence can construct a routine that will win her and her fellow cheerleaders the national title? I won’t tell you, but what I will tell you is that there are definitely some bumps along the road. Bitches, bros and hoes all stand in Torrence’s way, but will Torrence push through the bad in order to receive the good? Good question.

The Wedding Planner (2001): Mary Fiore (Jennifer Lopez) is considered to be a very reputable wedding planner, she’s organized, charming, creative and might I say, rather sexy. Usually, she develops a close relationship with the couple getting married, however she seems to have gotten a little toooooo close to one of her client’s, Steve Edison (Matthew McConaughey). How does she meet Steve? Well, let me just say this- it involves a shoe getting stuck in a hole on the road. Huh? What does this have to do with anything? You should probably find out.

Zoolander (2001): Derek Zoolander (Ben Stiller) is the most sought after male fashion model. He is quirky, yet cool, serious, yet funny and weird, yet popular. How? I don’t know, he’s a mess, but a hot mess that WERKS. Due to Mr. Zoolander becoming overwhelmed by his popularity while also missing his family, he decides to stop modeling and work in the coal mines with his family members. However, little does Derek know that he has become the fashion industry’s means used to kill the Prime Minister of Malaysia. Jacobim Mugatu (Will Ferrel) is “in charge” of Derek and promises that he will prepare Derek to kill the Prime Minister without Derek knowing… Will Derek discover that he has been brainwashed? What will happen to the poor Prime Minister of Malayasia?

Orange County (2002): Unlike Torrence Shipman, Shaun Brumder (Colin Hanks) hates the majority of things in his life, and with good reason. His mother’s a drunk, his brother’s a drug addict and his city is infested with idiots. As you would imagine, Shaun can’t wait to get out of Orange County, but how will he do so? He thinks his writing will be his way out… He wishes to attend Standford University and he has the marks to get accepted, but what happens when his school guidance counselor sends in the wrong transcript? Things just get worse. Will Shaun achieve his goal and get into Standford?

Sweet Home Alabama (2002): “Lord, I’m comin’ home to you!” Doesn’t the title of the movie just make you want to sing “Sweet Home Alabama”? Well, I’m not talking about the song, I’m obviously talking about the 2002 film. Melanie Smooter (Reese Witherspoon) and Jake Perry (Josh Lucas) fall in love and to everyone’s surprise, get married when they’re pretty young. Yet, Melanie decides that she needs to leave Alabama, so she moves to NYC to become a fashion designer. Sounds great, until she gets engaged to Andrew Hennings (Patrick Dempsey). She informs him that she has to go home, alone, to tell her parents about the engagement- still not having told him that she is married to Jake. Once she returns home, she asks Jake to sign divorce papers… Does he?

Crossroads (2002): Wait, what? Britney Speaks can act? Well, kind of. Three best friends, Lucy (Britney Spears), Mimi (Taryn Manning) and Kit (Zoe Saldana) bury a “wish box” when they are kids, promising one another that they will open the box on the night of their high school graduation. However, things change. The girls grow up to live very different lifestyles and do not remain to be best friends, for now. Lucy is innocent, Mimi is wild and Kit is essentially a princess. I’ll share with you a little secret- they open the box and one of Lucy’s wishes is to be able to see her mom again… So, what do the girls do? They embark on a road trip to California, a very interesting road trip. Do you think that the three become friends again? Do you think Lucy’s mother is everything that she had hoped she would be and more?

13 Going on 30 (2004): Who wants to be a loser? No one, not even Jenna Rink (Jennifer Garner). This poor little girl wants nothing else but to be popular, and in order to be considered popular in Jenna’s life, she must join the “Six Chicks”, the most popular girl group at Jenna’s school. Jenna invites all of the “Six Chicks” to her 13th birthday party and to my surprise, they actually come. But sadly, they leave during a dirty little game of “Seven Minutes in Heaven”. Jenna freaks out, locks herself in a closet and wishes to be “30, flirty and thriving”. I’ll tell you that Jenna gets her wish, but does Jenna regret what she wishes for?

So, these movies range from being cute to dumb. However, I can promise you that all of these movies will be at the very least, extremely entertaining! What’s my favourite out of all these movies? I think I’m going to have to say Scary Movie… Why? Two reasons: My grandmother took me to see it when I was six, not knowing what the movie was about… She tried to cover my eyes the entire time, but if she thought I wasn’t going to watch the film because it was “inappropriate”, she was dreaming. Secondly, it’s just a great movie, you’ll agree with me if you can dumb yourself down for a few hours.
