RANT: Good Parenting vs Bad Parenting!

It really bugs me when parents don’t want to take the time to teach their own kids, but would rather bitch and fight with everyone else to bend to the needs of their children.
I don’t have children, I admit that freely, but I have worked in the school system for several years and have seen this on a regular basis.
Recently in the northern community I live in, there have been some parents who sit on their deck yelling at every driver going past to slow down. The speed limit in this area is 10km/hr. Not fast at all. These parents would rather argue with adult drivers to slow down as opposed to teaching their kids to not run into the street when a car is going past, or to get off the road when they do see a vehicle coming their way. The lax in parenting went even further when these parents went so far as to install a speed bump in front of their property to further force cars to slow down. Aside from these lazy parents I’ve seen those who believe their child can do no wrong.

After witnessing an extreme case of bullying I expected the parent to step in and stop the incident, maybe even explain to the kid why what he was doing was wrong. Instead this parent actually helped his child out by questioning the girl being bullied why she couldn’t handle being picked on by someone 5 years younger than her. It made for an intense situation with the poor girl feeling totally intimidated by the boy AND his father. Needless to say that just teaches the boy that being a bully and being disrespectful to females is acceptable which in turn could make this child a real monster when he gets older.

Everything seems to go back to the “Generation Me” era. Young parents are feeling entitled to do their own thing with their own sense of entitlement, while their children are bringing themselves up as they see fit. Everyone is an expert nowadays and as such no one can do wrong. The “class” of society is quickly deteriorating and honestly I feel we are reverting to a more stone-age society with new-age technology.

In my age, children were taught right from wrong, we were taught to respect our elders, in fact we were taught to respect everyone. Treat others as you wish to be treated was the rule. Now youth expects everyone to respect them instantly rather than show respect in order to earn respect. Add to all this the fact that children are so tuned into electronic devices that they are clueless to the world around them and you’re back to the kids walking, running or playing into traffic. I’m sorry, but I have common sense that way. Cars are bigger than me, therefore they are going to hurt me if I don’t pay attention. I’m not expecting the driver to instantly have respect for me and to know I’m an idiot who will walk right in front of them forcing the driver to stop. Most people become parents by choice. Maybe they should choose to care for their own kids and teach them how to be a part of a world that doesn’t revolve solely around them.
