VELD Music Festival 2013 Review

VELD 2013 Recap

On August 3rd and 4th Toronto was infiltrated for the second time by the biggest EDM festival that the city has ever seen, VELD Music Festival (www.veldmusicfestival.com/‎). This event kicked off and kept the people dancing for 2 day taking the city well above cloud 9.

It felt so good to be back at Downsview Park once again, surrounded by fellow EDM lovers and awesome music. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect, the sun was shining and the wind kept the masses from getting too hot.

Walking over from the parking lot, there were hundreds of colorful people walking the streets as we all made our way over to the grounds. In the distance you can hear the bass thumping in the background as the party was underway. Getting closer and closer to the entrance, the buzz about the artists such as Sevon Lions, Steve Angelo, Kaskade and Carlo Lio was circling the air.

My friends and I lined up to get in and were jumping up and down full of excitement and anticipating for the day we had ahead. Passing through the gates and into the open field, we finally made it and ready to jam out! The layout consisted of plenty of space to roam around and having everything spread out with minimal traffic. The stages were far enough apart to not have the sounds bleed into each other, kudos to INK ENTERTAINMENT (www.ink-00.com/‎).

Walking over to the main stage, we noticed it had gotten a lot smaller but that only means there was that much more room to rage. Bacardi Tent had the most improvement overall, the sound system in there was incredible. The bass was so deep; I could feel it through my feet all the way to my heart. The crowd this year comparing to last had grown and expanded exponentially. Not only did we have ravers coming from other Providences, I also met some extremely friendly ravers from the U.S. The love for electronic music has exploded and the crowd was amazing. Most people were friendly and were a blast to party with, everywhere I turned to there were people losing it and having so much fun.

Aside from the usual outfits that we are accustom to, there were several outstanding unique and distinct crazy costumes, such as these 2 characters on stilts, dressed up like something from the circus; face paint, pointy jingling hats and all. I’d take my pointy hat off to them if I had one because it’s difficult enough to walk through the grass. They were there for a good time just like everyone else and they added a sense of fun and jest to the entire experience. Other wacky fun stuff I saw there were people walking around with huge cut outs of Kaskade and Dillon Francis head’s. On the second day there were a handful of banana’s walking around for Dadalife, including a full out head-to-toe banana in pajama outfit. The weirdest outfit I saw were these 3 guys covered in leopard prints from head to toe including a tail stuck to their bum. Toronto people have the most creative and eye catching outfits I have seen yet.

The line-up for both days was equally balanced and amazing. Nothing beats having Kaskade and Above and Beyond playing back to back, both DJs delivered astonishing performances but of course all of us expected nothing less. These are 2 artists that I personally and along with many other around the world have established a deep connection with which absolutely no words can describe. During Above and Beyond’s set they wrote on the screen “ We are the Electronic Music Generation,” and the voices of 50,000 people screamed and cheered out loud celebrating an unforgettable landmark in the history of Toronto’s Electronic Dance Music. I haven’t seen or felt such a connection during that moment, it was most definitely a highlight of my life. On day 2, hands down Adventure Club had the grimiest set out of all. Playing their infamous song “Crave you,” and “Youth” the whole crowd was in a total craze. But I have to say the most gripping moment was in the Bacardi Tent when John Digweed played Tiesto’s song “Lethal Industry.” Just thinking about it now sends chills up and down my spine.

Love This City TV’s crazy hosts Melissa and Hondo got a chance to catch up and interview some big names at the festival including: Steve Angello (steveangello.com/‎), PleasureKraft (www.pleasurekraft.com/‎), Carlo Lio (https://www.facebook.com/djcarlolio‎), Adventure Club (https://www.facebook.com/AdventureClubDub‎) Candyland (https://www.facebook.com/CandylandDJs) other amazing dj’s

Overall Veld was an amazing experience, the crowd and kicking hard all day and night and the music took us home track after track. Lastly we have to give props to INK ENTERTAINMENT (www.ink-00.com/‎) for once again put together a show that moved the masses and gave us all an experience that was well worth the wait. For all Toronto EDM lovers, VELD 2014 is a must do on your bucket list.
