“Ibiza will be Earth’s final refuge”. This is a famous prediction by the 15th century French astrologer and physician, Nostradamus. Ibiza is a mysterious land and a pride of Spain. This magnetic tourist spot is a great place to relax. Though it is a relatively small place, the island and its cities have been recognized as the world- famous spot for their tourism, nightlife and electronic music the island has started off. But being this prominent, Ibiza Island has a very significant and colorful history.

It all started with the Phoenicians having to find this popular island back in the middle of the 7th century BC. This is where the fascinating history began. Phoenicians are also the people who had granted Ibiza the name. They are ruling the island for so many years until they have been conquered by the Assyrians. This phenomenon has led Ibiza to come under the Carthage rule and established the early trade. These are the days when Ibiza has become the center for items such as wool, a strong fermented fish sauce called garum, and salt. And comes the 400 BC, the island has become a very momentous and successful Mediterranean trading spot.

However, such a perfect place has never escaped war and attacks. Second Punic War has once intruded the beauty of the island. Though Carthage has held firm, it did not stay long and had no choice but to sign a treaty with the powerful Romans that made the island to become part of the ever- expanding Roman Empire. This point in the history of Ibiza has been documented and shown in the museum in town. And when the Roman Empire fell, Ibiza has landed into the hands of several rulers including the Vandals, Byzantines, Moorish and the Norwegian crusaders. After being a captive, Ibiza has finally freed itself and remained self- governed for 500 years when Aragonese King James I took over in the middle of 1230. Then again, the government has been abolished by the Spanish monarch King Philip V. And this is the juncture when Ibiza has been turned into a booming tourist destination from being just a sluggish fishing island.

Thus, this vibrant history of Ibiza has been defied for the people of today just enjoy the sceneries and the nature privileges the island can offer. This may be the birthplace of the famous Christopher Columbus, but for people, it is the perfect place for relaxation.
