Love This City TV Catches Up With Nathan Barato

Interview By: Djole Jovkovic & Christina Schmidt

Talented Nathan Barato continues to create waves as he unites with fellow Toronto native, up and coming Room 303, to bring us Every Time I See You on Hot Creations — one of house and techno’s leading record labels. Everytime I See You resonates an old school feel good vibe by combining groovy tribal rhythms, a massive bassline, and captivating vocals. This record illustrates Nathan Barato & Room 303’s production experience and is guaranteed to maintain international dancefloor presence for a long time. After the positive response of his latest releases and the buzz that followed his 7 hour set at Coda we caught up with Barato to get an inside look on everything he’s working on.

LTC: You have been one of the leaders in Toronto’s underground scene for over a decade. Tell us a little bit about how the city of Toronto has influenced you as a DJ and producer?

NB: Being a regular in Toronto’s underground scene has given me a lot of confidence to just be myself and express myself in the best way I know how. The people in the industry and the people on the dance floor have been really supportive and give me the freedom to try some things. I’m really lucky.

LTC: Let’s talk about your 7-hour set at CODA a few weeks ago, hands down one of the club’s best events of the year! From your side of the decks, tell us about the energy you experienced from all your hometown fans.

NB: Hey, thanks I’m glad you think so! From my end it was great! It’s funny how fast time flies during a set like that. It’s easy to miss some moments because I’m working to set up the next tracks, but here and there I’d take a second to see what was what, and it felt so good to have that unison feeling with the crowd. I love the shit out of them.

LTC: You have had an incredible year, a residency at Marco Carola’s Music On party in Ibiza, Mexico, Milan and Miami, your debut at Fabric London, Jamie Jones Paradise Party, and the list goes on. Having played some of the biggest clubs and music festivals all over the world, what gigs have been unforgettable to you and what parties do you hope to play at in the future?

NB: I’m pretty simplistic in this sense; as for me nearly every gig feels so amazing when it happens. They’re all unforgettable in a way – lol and from the same token I’m happy to take what comes my way and hope that the gigs continue to be as great as they have been!

LTC: Being in the game for years, what advice would you give to up-and-coming DJs and producers to help them turn their passion into a career?

NB: Well, they should try to be different, and find a quality that is different from everyone else and exploit it. Don’t give up! When things get really tough, accept that they will get even tougher before they get better. Know that they WILL get better. Just keep working hard non-stop.

LTC: What inspires you musically and who are some of your musical heroes?

NB: Many things inspire me musically and I’m pretty open- minded. A few heroes that come to mind are John Ciafone, Chilly Gonzales, and MAW. I could go on! There’s so many – lol

LTC: Following up on your recent successful releases/remix’s-Everytime I See You and Rendezvous, are there any current projects that you are working on that you are excited about?

NB: Ya for sure, I have remixes coming out on Incorrect, Transmit, Material, Circus as well as an EP for Moda Black. I have another remix of a personal classic favorite of mine by Gypsy Men aka Todd Terry ‘Hear The Music.’ Lastly I also have a big personal project I’m going to keep secret for now. 😉
