On October 18-20, 2013, the 48 Hour Film Project comes to Toronto where aspiring filmmakers will compete to see who can make the best short film in only 48 hours. The winning film will then compete against others films from around the world. Those of you that are filmmakers understand just how difficult it is to construct a complete film in such a short amount of time. A great film takes careful planning and preparation, but this intense competition challenges directors, cinematographers and editors to show what they’ve got on the fly.
Here’s how it works. In order to make sure no one plans any production elements before the day of the competition, each team is assigned a character, a prop, a line or dialogue and a genre to include in their movie. After the high-pressure competition comes to a close, each entry will be screened on the big screen of a local movie theatre and judged by a panel of judges made of film critics, producers, actors and filmmakers. They will be making their decision based on the films’ artistic merit, technical merit and adherence to the assignment. No matter which film wins, every entry is then eligible to win the Audience Award determined by the crowd’s votes.
The 48 Hour Film Project’s 2013 tour brings the competition to cities across the globe. The winner of each city award will be screened at Filmapalooza, the official 48HFP awards weekend taking place in the fun-loving city of New Orleans. This entire event is a networking opportunity like no other that brings the sleepless efforts of every filmmaker into one epic weekend.
